| It is August 14, 2001,
and it is almost midnight. I am down here in Cabo ( I have a Plaza in front of the
surf called the Plaza Costa Azul), and will be traveling up to California on Friday,
August 17. My son, Justin, is competing in the NSSA Surf Tour and the first contest
is in Oxnard on September 1. I'll be there to cheerlead and may compete myself.
I have just sold a business here in Mexico, and am driving up to CA. in my
motorhome for a little R&R. I will be traveling in the Southern California area
for a while, and may decide to stay up there. |
Aging like a fine wine, and
still surfing every chance I get. Here is a recent photo in the curl.. |

Here is our beachhouse in Cabo, when we had Costa Azul Massage from 1996-98. It
may be reopening soon. It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it! |

Surfing is so much fun when the waves are good and the water is warm. Here is
Justin and myself on a great day. |

Robert Quirk - Aug. 14, 2001 -
12:10am |
Aug. 15, 2001, Well, it was another day in Mexico. I went around
today and paid some bills, did a little work, and began preparing the motorhome for the
trip up. My friend, Mike Doyle (ex-world champion surfer), wants me to come up and
visit him in Fallbrook, but I just received an email from him saying it was 105
degrees! He is participating in an art show and surf contest in La Jolla on
August 26 for a annual charity he has been doing for years. It sounds like it'll be
a fun day. Justin called today also, he is such a sweet baby. I really miss
him, but guess he's living out his dreams. Anyway, I don't know if anyone will ever
be reading this, but it's kind of fun. I better get to bed early tonight, I want to
exercise and surf in the morning! Buenas Noches!
|
| This is my sweet baby Justin
(well, he'll always be MY baby!). He will be 18 years old in March, and I have spent
the past 17 1/2 years raising and grooming him to be a championship surfer. He has a
mantel full of trophies, several good sponsers, and will tour with the countries top
amateur association, the NSSA, for the 2001-2002 West Coast Tour. He will go pro the
following year. It is REALLY hard cutting the strings, but he is TOTALLY focused on
making a career out of surfing. |

Aug. 16 This will be my last entry for awhile, I'm
leaving for the States tomorrow and will be on the road. I got up early and
exercised this morning around 5-7am. I worked on the motorhome today, fixed the
carbaurator, welded the ladder to the roof, and fixed up a rack for the front so I can buy
a motorcycle and carry it around while I'm up in the States. Got the last of the
bills paid, now all I need to do is pack up. I just finished a great book last
night, one of the best I have ever read. Power of the Sub Concious Mind by
Dr. Joseph Murphy. If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and check it out
Better go for now!Aug. 23 (Oceanside, CA.) I had a beautiful
trip up from Cabo. I left on Friday, and didn't make here until Monday. I
took my time, and surfed at a couple neat spots along the way. The motorhome drove
absolutely perfect. It's an old 1977, but only has 42,000 original miles.
I've been busy since I've been here. I've been getting all of Justins documents
prepared to register him at Oceanside High school tomorrow. Also got the motorhome
registered yesterday. I went out to Hawaiin Gardens Casino last night and played
about 4 hours of poker. I am a very good card player, and monitor my time on the
tables and amount of winnings (or losses). I ended up winning a meager $12 for my
efforts last night, but had a lot of fun. Mom and Benny came by for dinner at the
Casino. I am adding their photo below!

Here is a photo of Benny, Mom, and myself at the Casino, after a good
dinner. Mom now has a casino really close to her house, and it's a favorite stopping
place when in town. |
| Sept. 2 (Oxnard, CA.) - We had
the NSSA surf tournament yesterday, and it was one of the proudest moments of my
life! This is the top amatuer competition in the United States, and the opening of
this years tour. It had about 100 contestants competing for recognition and a
trophy. Most of the kids are hoping to become pro surfers someday, and this where
they make or break it. Justin had about 60 kids in his division, and he did
REALLY good. He got all the way to the finals, and took 6th place for Juniors.
I decided to enter also, just for fun. I've heard pro surfers are washed up by 25
years of age, but don't believe it! At 45 I ended up taking home the trophy for the
longboard division. It was really nice to walk away with my son in the only father
and son combo to make it to the finals. It was really one of those days I'll
remember forever.

 |
Justin wants to be a professional surfer, and has been totally
focused for most of his life on doing it. I wanted to help get him started on the
surf tour this year. Here is a picture of us taken on Sept. 1, after competing all
day in the opening NSSA surf contest in Oxnard. |
| Justin went through 60 competitors in his division to make it to the
finals. Here is a photo of him and the other top surfers. The results and more
info will be in next months Surfer Magazine. I really couldn't be much prouder of my
son. |
 |
| Sunday, Sept. 16 - Well, I just got back here
to Cabo a week ago. I had a great trip and the drive down the Baja was
beautiful! Justin enrolled in his senior year of high school, living with his
history teacher and wife, and started on the NSSA surf tour. I got a lot done
while up in the States, and Justin is doing what he wants to do. Life is really
different down here without him. After living with him for 17 1/2 years, I am use to
cooking for him, and keeping an eye on him. Of course I miss him, and the first few
days were hard without him. But now I'm actually beginning to enjoy it! No kid
to worry about, and one less mouth to feed (well, he's still on the payroll until he turns
18 in March) Anyway, I exercised everyday of the week, and just got back
from spending the morning surfing great waves down at the beach. My business changes
hands on October 1, so I have 2 weeks from today to prepare for the transfer. After
that I will try to reopen the massage business here at the Plaza and will bring in some
therapists to operate it. Then, I will move over to San Pedritos (about an hour from
here). It is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. I have 1/4
acre there, and will begin building a beach house. I am hoping to be over there by
Nov.1. It is a very spiritual area, very peaceful and tranquil. Surfers come
from all over the world to surf the wave between November and March. I've been going
there for about 15 years, and will finally be living there. It is by a little town
called Todos Santos, which is where the original Hotel California is located that the
Eagles wrote a song about. Anyway, better sign off for now. |

Sept. 18
The sunrises will light up the sky in shades of pink. This photo was taken
right out front this morning. The water is about 80 degrees, and a couple friends
are already in the water. |
